Research and compare at least 3 removalists

Compare on price, reviews and insurance coverage. Get recommendations from friends and check online ratings.

Request quotes and confirm availability

Ask for written quotes that break down costs. Watch for hidden fees like stair charges or weekend surcharges.

Book your removalist

Lock in your date early — peak periods fill up fast. Make sure you receive a consignment note or written confirmation.

Notify landlord or property manager of move-out date
Sort belongings — donate, sell, or discard what you don't need

Fewer items means a smaller truck and a lower bill. Estimate your load in cubic metres to get accurate quotes.

Start packing non-essential items

Begin with seasonal gear, books and décor you won't need before moving day.

Update address with bank, ATO and MyGov

Don't forget superannuation, health insurance and any subscriptions.

Set up mail redirection with Australia Post

Redirect for at least 6 months to catch anything you miss.

Notify employer of new address
Arrange transfer or connection of electricity, gas and internet

Book connections at least two weeks ahead so everything is live on move-in day.

Notify schools, childcare or medical providers

Request records transfers and update emergency contact details.

Order boxes, bubble wrap, tape and packing paper

Use a box calculator to avoid over-ordering. Plastic crates are a reusable alternative.

Confirm booking details with your removalist
Pack all rooms except essentials

Wrap fragile and valuable items carefully — these are the most common damage claims.

Label boxes clearly with room and contents

Good labelling speeds up unloading and helps movers place boxes in the right rooms.

Disassemble flat-pack or oversized furniture

Bag and label screws so you can reassemble quickly. Check if your mover offers this service.

Defrost and clean the fridge/freezer

Allow 24 hours for defrosting. Removalists won't transport a wet fridge.

Arrange parking for the removalist truck

Poor access can lead to extra fees. Check for low branches, narrow driveways or permit-only zones.

Notify body corporate or building manager if applicable

Pack an essentials bag (documents, chargers, toiletries, snacks)

Keep it with you — not on the truck. Include medications, a change of clothes and phone chargers.

Do a final walkthrough of old home — check all rooms, cupboards, roof storage
Take photos of meter readings at both properties
Supervise loading and note any pre-existing damage

Walk through the inventory with the driver and photograph anything already damaged.

Hand over keys to landlord or agent
Check all items on delivery and sign off with the removalist

Note any damage on the consignment note before signing. Report issues immediately.

After the move

0/7
Unpack essentials first — bedroom, bathroom, kitchen

Focus on the rooms you need most. The rest can wait a few days.

Check for any damage and report to removalist immediately

Take photos and contact the removalist in writing within 24 hours. Keep all receipts.

Update driver's licence address

Most states require this within 14 days of moving.

Update electoral roll details
Update home and contents insurance

Your premiums may change at a new address. Review your cover levels.

Apply for rental bond return if applicable
